First International Meeting of the 3HUTS Project in Nitra, Slovakia

From May 10th to 13th, 2024, the picturesque town of Nitra, Slovakia, played host to the first international meeting of the 3HUTS project, an initiative under Erasmus+ Sport. This project focuses on the inclusion of women’s needs in the planning and development of hiking infrastructure, aiming to create more inclusive outdoor experiences for all.

The meeting brought together 24 enthusiastic participants from Austria, Greece and Slovakia, all united by a shared passion for hiking and gender inclusivity. Over the four days, attendees engaged in a series of hikes and workshops designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of trail maintenance, navigation, and the unique challenges faced by women in mountain environments.

Hiking Infrastructure and Navigation

Participants had the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of hiking infrastructure. They learned how trails are meticulously maintained, how to accurately read trail signs, and how to analyze trails through a gender lens. These hands-on experiences included detailed workshops and actual hikes, giving participants a close-up view of trail upkeep and the importance of clear navigation aids.

Inclusion of Women’s Needs in Planning Hiking Infrastructure

The core focus of the 3HUTS project is the inclusion of women’s needs in hiking infrastructure planning. Discussions and workshops highlighted the differences between men’s and women’s experiences in the mountains. Participants explored how current hiking infrastructure meets—or fails to meet—these needs and discussed practical improvements. Interactive sessions allowed participants to identify specific requirements and challenges women face on the trails, fostering a deeper understanding of how to make hiking more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Next Steps for 3HUTS

This inaugural meeting set the stage for future collaborations and initiatives within the 3HUTS project. The next gathering will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, where participants will continue their work on enhancing hiking infrastructure with a focus on inclusivity.

Stay tuned for more updates as the 3HUTS project continues to pave the way for more inclusive and equitable hiking experiences. By addressing the specific needs of women in outdoor activities, this project aims to ensure that all hikers can enjoy the beauty and challenge of the mountains safely and comfortably.
