In September 2024, the SIASP – Sustainable and Inclusive Access to Sport Practice project held its second study visit in Porvoo, Finland. Organised by the Winter Cycling Federation, this visit offered a unique opportunity for participants to explore sustainable mobility practices while attending the international VeloFinland conference.

Exploring Cycling Innovations at VeloFinland

The VeloFinland conference was a key highlight of the study visit. Participants attended presentations and workshops covering a wide range of topics, including the European Cycling Declaration and initiatives to boost cycling in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Other sessions focused on cycling tourism as a tool for sustainable mobility, cycling economics, and urban planning concepts such as Superblocks and Low-Traffic Neighborhoods.

During the conference, the SIASP project was presented, showcasing its commitment to creating accessible and inclusive sport facilities. The presentation emphasized best practices, such as reducing the economic burden of sports-related injuries and the importance of sustainable transportation options for children’s sports activities.

Experiencing Finland’s Cycling Culture

Participants also had the chance to experience Finland’s cycling culture firsthand. Highlights included downhill biking at Kokon Bike Park and exploring bike infrastructure innovations. The group learned about Deutsche Bahn’s bike parking initiatives near train stations and Finland’s efforts to align sustainable mobility with the EU’s new green building law, which promotes energy efficiency and sustainable construction practices.

A Collaborative Approach to Sustainable Sport

The visit reinforced the SIASP project’s mission of integrating sustainability and inclusivity into sports. By learning from Finland’s best practices and engaging in discussions on cycling and mobility, participants gained valuable insights to apply in their own communities.

The SIASP project is co-funded by the European Union, promoting sustainable and inclusive access to sports across Europe. Keep an eye out for future events and developments, with the next study visit in Slovakia coming soon!
