In March 2024, ACTIVE Austria had the pleasure of hosting an insightful study visit in Vienna as part of the SIASP – Sustainable and Inclusive Access to Sport Practice project. The event brought together partners from Cyklokoalícia and the Winter Cycling Federation, showcasing best practices in promoting cycling infrastructure and sustainable mobility for children and their families.

Exploring Vienna’s Cycling Innovations

Over two days, participants engaged in a series of meetings with local stakeholders and explored important cycling infrastructure. One of the key highlights was a bike tour led by Alec Hager from Die Radvokaten. The tour showcased notable sites, including the “Superblock” in Vienna’s Favoriten district and several reconstructed cycling paths essential for urban mobility.

The study visit also included stops at the Vienna Mobility Agency and VCÖ, where participants learned about current projects aimed at encouraging active mobility, especially in schools. These discussions centered on fostering a cycling culture among children and enhancing accessibility to safe cycling routes.

Cycling Playgrounds for Kids

Part of the visit was also a tour of innovative cycling playgrounds in Radspielplatz Seestadt and Radmotorikpark Kaisermühlen. These playgrounds are designed to help children practice cycling in a fun and secure environment, reinforcing the importance of active mobility from an early age.

Planning Ahead

The study visit concluded with the second transnational project meeting, where the partners planned future study visits in Finland and Slovakia. In addition, they discussed the development of key project outputs, such as educational booklets and guides, which will promote both sport services and sustainable transportation.
