Over the course of summer 2023, we organised a series of free online German lessons, focusing on beginners living in Austria and helping them to get familiar with the German language by learning useful vocabulary, phrases and grasp the basic of German grammar. Lessons took place twice a week and covered topic ranging from A1 to A2 level.

These lessons proved to be incredibly beneficial for participants, helping them to gain confidence in their ability to communicate in everyday situations and navigate the complexities of the German language. The curriculum covered essential topics such as the present, past and future tenses, the use of key verbs like “haben,” “sein,”. Participants also learned about the intricacies of German articles and cases and the usage of verbs with accusative and dative prepositions. Through these comprehensive lessons, participants were able to build a solid foundation in German, which has greatly contributed to their successful integration into Austrian society.

The lessons were led by ACTIVE Austria volunteer Cansu who is an enthusiastic and passionate language teacher, translator, and volunteer living in Istanbul, Turkey. She studies translation studies of German-English and Russian at Sakarya University while giving private lessons online since January 2023. Her professional experience ranges from working as a translator for Microsoft in 2020 to teaching German online with Volunteer Teacher’s Organization in California in 2021. Cansu loves to share her knowledge with students and considers her teaching not only as a job, but also as something she does with heart and enthusiasm.

These classes were an excellent free opportunity available to people living in Austria who wished to learn German. With our flexible learning approach, students were able to learn at their own pace, making it convenient even for those with busy schedules. Additionally, the online format ensured that students could interact with their peers and teacher, making the lessons both engaging and interactive.
